The mountains get under your skin. People who have left
the Appalachian chain find that they want to come back, long to see
the humps. We all know the precious, fleeting moments of awe when
we see the mist rise, the sun set, clouds scud by, fields ripen and
water flow on its way to the sea. While we want to stop and take it
all in, we are too often focused on the important things
that give shape to our days.
After years of making only abstract paintings, I began
to follow the mountains siren call. Painting these moments we
all enjoy has been my pleasure and passion since moving to a farm in
the middle of the Alleghany Mountains. The variety and beauty of the
land in Virginia makes it a glorious place to live and to paint
